SATURDAY APRIL 26TH, 2008 - OPENING DAY

The Lovells Township Historical Society has announced that world-famous trout fisheries research biologist Gaylord Alexander and internationally-known fly tier Jeff “Bear”Andrews will be the featured presenters at its sixth annual Trout Opener on Saturday, April 26, 2008. Alexander, retired head of the Department of Natural Resources Hunt Creek Research Station near Lewiston, will discuss his trout research on the North Branch of the Au Sable River from 1956 until his retirement in 1995. Andrews, winner of numerous fly tying awards and creator of several steelhead and trout patterns, will demonstrate his wonderful skill behind the vice.

The Society will also open its sixth consecutive history of trout fishing exhibit in the log museum. This year’s exhibit will focus on the life and times of T.E. Douglas, who built the Douglas Hotel (now Fuller’s North Branch Outing Club) as a fishing and hunting lodge in the early twentieth century and whose guests included many famous American business titans. The Society museum is the only one in Michigan that annually features exhibits on the history of trout fishing.

The Opener, which will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m., will also feature a casting demonstration with vintage bamboo fly rods and a free lunch. All events are free and open to the public.
